The Importance of SEL
May 02, 2021Social Emotional Learning is more than just a fad or an occasional conversation here and there. Social emotional learning is an integral part of the learning process and if you want the best for your students you'll quickly begin to understand why it is here to stay. The fact is, students benefit tremendously from being exposed to social emotional learning that is embedded into daily instructional practices. Despite what some may think, SEL is not something extra, SEL is essential to student achievement. When implemented the right way, everyone benefits.
I realized that relationships were important as a first year teacher. I struggled a lot and I felt that no amount of education could have prepared me for teaching. I learned through experience that first and foremost you have to focus on relationships that matter. It is not an easy task but it can done, our goal at Peay and Associates Consultant Group is to simplify the process of infusing SEL into everyday instructional practices for educators across the country. As adults we struggle with understanding our own emotions and feelings, how do we expect students to know something that was never taught to them? SEL can significantly impact student learning in so many ways, as a building principal I was able to reduce referrals by almost 50% the first year of implementing SEL school-wide.
I can tell you this, there will be good days and there will be not so good days. SEL is a mindset. You cannot implement it correctly if you are not committed to putting in the work necessary to see change. As educators, we already work hard, we're underpaid, and at times the least respected. SEL will not only make your job easier, it will increase the chances of student success. I've seen the benefits of implementing SEL first hand. Behavior management is my zone of genius and students are my priority. Have you taken the first step to establish meaningful relationships with your students?
